5 stunning winter destinations that are perfect for a last-minute break

It’s not too late to book a holiday to explore a new destination in 2025. In fact, the colder months could be the perfect time to jet off to admire incredible winter vistas.

If you need some winter destination inspiration, here are five options that could leave you in awe.

1. Dolomites, Italy

The Italian Dolomites boast natural beauty no matter the season you visit. But the mountain range looks magical when there’s fresh snow and dramatic sunsets, and you can even try snowshoeing on trails to fully embrace the winter season.

The good news is that picturesque spots that are usually crowded in the summer months, like Lake Braies, are far more peaceful when the mercury drops. So, you’ll be able to explore at your own pace and find some hidden gems where you can sample delicious dishes that often blend Austrian and Italian flavours.

If you love to visit a Christmas market, heading to the Dolomites before the end of the year could immerse you in the festive atmosphere as you browse handcrafted goods.

Holidaymakers who want to get active will have plenty of options too. From early December, there are lots of places to ski or snowboard, from trails perfect for beginners to those that offer a challenge amid the dramatic peaks.

2. Banff National Park, Canada

If you’re itching to travel long haul, why not consider Canada’s oldest national park?

Banff National Park is at the heart of the magnificent Canadian Rockies, so you can expect excellent mountain views and turquoise lakes. During the winter, you can hike to frozen waterfalls and then relax in a hot spring.

While grizzly and black bears are typically less active in winter, you still have a chance to spot incredible Canadian wildlife as you explore this area. If you’re lucky, you could see moose, elk, coyotes, and wolves.

If you want a slower pace to your holiday, attend the ice carving festival, take a historic tour, or sit back and enjoy the views from a horse-drawn carriage.

You should note that some areas of Banff National Park are closed during the winter months to protect wildlife. So, be sure to check that the sights you’re looking forward to seeing will be accessible before booking your trip.

3. Lapland, Finland

You might associate Lapland with young families, and if you want to treat children, there’s certainly plenty to keep them entertained, but this Finnish destination also has a lot to offer adults.

Lapland’s position in the Arctic Circle means you have a chance to see the famous northern lights. Some amazing accommodation options could mean you can experience the light show without leaving your cosy room, from glass igloos to luxury treehouses.

Taking a husky or reindeer sleigh ride is an excellent way to take in the wilderness, including forests and frozen lakes. Or if you want to whiz through the landscape, a snowmobile safari is an option, followed by a trip to a traditional sauna, of course.

4. Japanese Alps, Japan

When you think of incredible sights in Japan, the iconic Mount Fuji or cherry blossom season might spring to mind, but overlooking the Japanese Alps would mean missing out.

The series of mountain ranges – known as the Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi – bisects the main Island of Japan, Honshu. The snow-tipped peaks, teal rivers, and thick pine forests make it a great holiday spot for nature lovers.

The area is known for heavy snowfall, so you’re almost guaranteed breathtaking winter views. The historic towns in the Japanese Alps look particularly picturesque during the winter months. Takayama is a must-visit if you want to explore the history and culture of Japan. The old town is beautifully preserved with Edo-period architecture.

You can also embrace onsen culture by relaxing in a hot spring (onsen) surrounded by snow-covered mountains – it’s the perfect way to unwind.

5. New York, USA

If you prefer the hustle and bustle of a big city over nature, New York, USA, makes an exceptional winter destination. The city truly embraces the festive spirit, as parts of the city transform into a magical winter wonderland with window displays, ice rinks, and more popping up across New York.

Of course, there are plenty of iconic spots to visit in New York, including the Empire State Building and Central Park, and an abundance of museums and galleries if you want to take in some culture.

While still busy, compared to other seasons, New York is quieter in the winter months with fewer tourists, especially if you visit after the festive celebrations have ended.

Our former financial adviser was retiring and recommended Ray to us. He alleviated the constant worry of where to best invest our savings without too much risk. We’re very pleased with the results over the last 10 years. He explains things in layman's language, which we appreciate, and gives us the confidence we have made the right choices. What more can people expect?

We had pension policies and investments that needed sorting out ready for retirement. We didn't know what to expect from a financial adviser. We assumed that he would simply advise us where to get the best deals. How wrong we were. Ray took us right back to basics. He made us carefully consider what we really wanted to achieve. He has allowed us to start to really enjoy our retirement.

I needed financial advice about pensions and investments as I approached retirement. My wife was in the same position. Ray Martin worked out a comprehensive plan for putting my pension provision and savings into proper order. He did the same for my wife. He has continued to provide us with advice ever since. Ray is always straightforward, open and proactive.

I was approaching retirement and wanting to look into limiting taxation and Inheritance Tax, as well as providing for my wife. Ray provided sound advice to switch from my current arrangement to a Drawdown Pension and ISA investments. I have now retired and have started seeing the benefits of his advice. The returns on my portfolio have increased beyond expectation. Ray performed extremely well.

I had sold my house and didn't know how to invest the money. Ray invested very wisely and there has been about a 5% increase every year. He listened to our queries, gave answers that we fully understood and followed any requests. He always had time for us, and never rushed us. We would have been financially at a loss without his help.

Ray has been advising my wife and me for about 20 years. He is everything one could hope for in a financial adviser: wonderfully enthusiastic, extremely well informed, completely trustworthy and scrupulously observant of the regulatory requirements. He is able to explain complex matters very clearly, and so far, his advice has always been first class.

I had just been widowed. Ray sorted out and simplified what was a very complex set of investments into a much less confusing portfolio. As the financial director of a company, I was seeking to get advice on how to plan and invest for retirement. Without a doubt, Ray Martin helped me understand and plan how to fund my retirement. Ray has been with me every step of the way. His advice has been invaluable. I retired and achieved my annual income goal. His continued advice is helping me in the next stage of my life.

Mike

I needed some advice regarding my late mother’s estate. I had also retired and required advice on how to manage my private pension. Ray was extremely helpful, and his advice was very clear and easy to understand. I came away from our initial meeting feeling very relieved and less stressed. We have just had our first yearly review and I was surprised how well my investments had done.
